Ironbark Prime SAMM

About Ironbark Prime SAMM

The formation of Ironbark Prime SAMM sheep stud is currently in progress.

Our objective is to produce Quality Stud Rams and Commercial Rams with emphasis on fertility, growth rates and meat yield while eliminating animals with unsuitabe wool quality. (60% meat, 40% wool)
We are keen to actively promote the breed as we strongly believe SAMM sheep are very competitive and under utilised in Australia.

Why SAMM?

SAMM (South American Meat Merino) sheep are primarily meat sheep. They are highly fertile, have strong maternal instinct and have high milk production increasing lamb survival rate. Lambs are fast growing reaching slaughter weights at a young age. SAMM lambs (and SAMM x Lambs) are well suited to feed lotting, efficiently growing to heavy, high yielding export lambs.

SAMM sheep are very hardy and long living sheep, they adapt to their environment, they do well under tough nutritional conditions and are highly productive in higher rainfall areas. SAMM sheep are considered unseasonable breeders providing an opportunity for accelerated joining programs.

SAMM sheep genuinely do not require mulesing, ewes typically cut around 3.4 kg of merino type wool that is stylish and soft handling with high comfort factor. In our experience, the wool attracts a similar price to merino wool of similar test results at auction despite negative wool broker appraisals.

SAMM sheep provide an opportunity to simplify your fat lamb / wool enterprise and increase profit.
The combination of early maturing, high fertility, hardy and long living ewes that produce efficient, fast growing, high yielding lambs result in high productivity and profitability!

For larger wool / fat lamb operations, replace traditional first cross Border Leister x Merino ewes with SAMM x Merino ewes for similar fertility, hybrid vigour and increase wool value with merino wool
For smaller fat lamb operations, run a self replacing flock removing the need to buy in first cross ewes. Join some ewes to SAMM Rams for ewe replacement and the remainder with a terminal sire for hybrid vigour.
